Santorini or Thira belongs to the complex of Cyclades islands. It is one of the most famous summer destinations for Greeks and tourists. It has a unique beauty that enchants every visitor.
The island is a creation of the volcanic eruption. The white – washed houses contrast with the black pebbles, creating a landscape you won¢t see anyplace else.
Santorini is famous all around the world for its sunset. Thousands of tourists gather every dawn at the Caldera in order to see the sun disappear into the sea. Apart from this, Santorini has a vivid nightlife meeting all tastes as and a great cuisine.
Imerovigli is located at the highest spot of Santorini, on a height of 300 m above the sea level. It is only 3km from the town center, Fira, with easy access to it. In Imerovigli you will see Skaros, the remains of an old Venetian castle. From Skaros there is a path to the church of Panagia Theoskepasti, at the end of the rock.
Skaros,
the venetian castle of Santorini, was
built during the Venetian rule by Marcus Sanoudos.
It was the island's capital until the 18th century.
It
was never defeated during the years of its existence and
was used as a look-out tower. Big part of the castle was
ruined during the 1817 earthquake, so
today we can only see its remains.
The
only picture we have for Skaros is a
drawing with pencil, exhibited at the Benaki Museum.
